Home Gyms versus Health Clubs

So you want to get fit but you aren’t sure whether to set up your own home gym or buy a club membership? Let’s look at some pros and cons for both options.

Pros to setting up a home gym

  • Convenience – no traveling to do a workout.
  • Privacy – You can work out wearing what you like and don’t need to feel self-conscious or embarrassed of anything.
  • Personalized – Your home gym is set up with the gear you like to use, and decorated the way you want.
  • One off expense – No regular fees like at a club.
  • Cheaper over the long term.
  • Family – Instead of spending even more time away from the family you can spend it at home and perhaps even involve them.
  • No waiting for equipment
  • Motivation – If you miss a work out that gym is sitting there looking at you and making you feel guilty.

Cons to home gyms

  • Antisocial – You won’t meet or interact with other people
  • No supervision and training – Many clubs have time with a trainer as part of the membership fee.
  • No variety of equipment – You may like a treadmill for cardio at first but it may not be long before you are wishing for a bike, rower or other machine.
  • More expensive in the short term.
  • One large expense at the start on something that is often a fad.
  • Family – Being with the family isn’t great if what you need is space and time out. Joining a club gets you out of the house.
  • Space – The spare room or garage you use for a home gym may be better used in some other way.

As you can see there are many points to both sides of the arguments for and against setting up home gyms. By reading through these points and thinking of your opinion to each you may find one choice much more appealing than the other.
