What is the Zone Diet? | |
|
The Zone Diet was created by Doctor Barry Sears and was first published in his book The Zone in 1995. The Zone Diet is designed to be a life long plan for healthy living, not just a quick fix diet. It is about eating the right combination and amount of food needed to balance your body’s hormones. According to proponents of the Zone Diet most weight loss program do not control the inflammation of fat cells and result in insulin resistance. By eating the right combination of foods, as in the Zone Diet, you should be able to reduce that inflammation and control insulin levels. Basically the diet consists of 1:2:3 ratios of healthy fat, protein and carbohydrates. Healthy fats include Omega 3 vitamins, olive oil, nuts and avocado. The proteins in the Zone Diet are foods like fish, white meats, low fat dairy and lean red meat. Carbohydrates in this diet are mostly vegetables and fruits, not rice and pasta. The times that you eat are important in the zone diet, with rules like eating within one hour of waking up, eating 4 to 6 hours after each meal etc. These rules apply whether you are hungry or not. The Zone Diet appears to be more sensible than many diets that can be found today but it is also a long-term commitment to healthy eating (as perhaps all diets really should be). As with all changes that will affect your body you should talk to your doctor before starting the diet. Resources: http://www.zoneliving.com
